Bus Shelter Planned at Former Hospital Site Facility in Oakland Set for End of 2017

Port Authority will build a new, glass-covered bus shelter, complete with bike racks and ticket-vending machines, at its busiest stop outside of Downtown Pittsburgh: the former site of Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC in Oakland.

The agency will receive bids Thursday for the shelter along Fifth Avenue at Atwood Street and is working on a lease agreement for the site with UPMC. The shelter will be close to the sidewalk and would use only part of the property.

The project is scheduled for completion in December 2017.

Port Authority spokesman Adam Brandolph said the shelter's glass design by Maynes Associates Architects of Pittsburgh should fit in well with other buildings in the area.

"It's really modern-looking - lots of glass," Mr. Brandolph said. "Hopefully it will improve public safety, too, because it's bright and has a lot of lights. …
