The Shawnee Heights board of education wants the state's next school finance formula to tie funding to the specific needs of students -- much as the state aid system once did.

On Monday, the Unified School District 450 school board gave superintendent Martin Stessman the go-ahead to collaborate with other Shawnee County districts in providing a united voice of input to Gov. Sam Brownback.

Brownback is seeking public input on school finance. The state Legislature scrapped Kansas' decades-old K-12 funding system in 2015 and replaced it with stopgap block grants until lawmakers craft a new formula.

The Shawnee Heights school board would like that formula to fund schools based on student headcount, special education enrollment and the percent of students from low-income families. …
