Paterson Getting $2.8M to Hire 15 Police Officers

The grants can be used to hire new officers or rehire officers who had to be laid off because of cutbacks.

Paterson will be able to hire 15 police officers as a result of a $2.8 million federal grant announced Monday by Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. and Sens. Cory Booker and Bob Menendez.

"This essential federal funding puts 15 additional police officers on the streets of Paterson at a time when budgetary constraints make it very difficult for cities to keep police departments fully staffed," Pascrell said.

The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Justice's COPS Hiring Program, which promotes public safety through community policing.

"The COPS grant program was created specifically so local municipalities can have police forces that are fully staffed, well- trained and understand the communities they are serving," said Pascrell, co-chairman of the Congressional Law Enforcement Caucus. …
