1918 An influenza epidemic, starting at the Cantonment Hospital in Point Breeze, victimized 23,268 Pittsburgh residents. Of the total, 1,374 died of lobar pneumonia and 678 of bronchopneumonia.

1960 The World Series began at Forbes Field. The Pirates beat the New York Yankees in the first game, 6-4.

1992 Eight thousand three hundred members of the International Association of Machinists (3,000 in Pittsburgh) struck against USAir. The strike was settled five days later.
