A good cover song takes a familiar song and adds something new to it. Often, the original is reworked. Drums and guitars are added or taken away. With metal band Disturbed's cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence," guitarist Dan Donegan said he didn't think they needed to turn a thoughtful folk song into an ode to sludge just to appease fans or a record label.

Donegan, who performs with Disturbed Saturday night at Big Sandy Superstore Arena in Huntington, said, "Without trying to sound cocky or arrogant, we're very confident in what we do. We write music and perform as a challenge. We do it for us. We're not trying to second guess the fans or the record company."

Donegan said when the band sat down to work on material for what might be considered their comeback record, as it's their first record of new material in five years, they started talking about including one good cover song.

"We were definitely throwing out names," he said.

None of them seemed to stick.

Donegan described Disturbed as being very efficient when it comes to working on music. They don't start something unless they plan to see it all the way through.

"We don't just throw stuff away," he said. "Once we're in, we're dedicated. We press forward until we get the results we want and the whole room has chills going down their spines."

With cover songs, Disturbed has had some success in the past.

Among the band's collection of hits is the cover of "Land of Confusion. Disturbed turned the semi-socially aware corporate pop hit from superstar '80s band Genesis into a thrashing, menacing hard rock anthem for the 21st century.
