N.J. Proposes Moves to Help Charter Schools Find Sites, Hire, Expand

TRENTON -- State education officials unveiled a host of proposed changes Wednesday to give more flexibility to charter schools to expand, hire staff and get access to facilities.

Governor Christie, a vocal supporter of charter schools, first announced in May that his administration would usher in reforms to help the schools "innovate" and grow.

The state Board of Education has to approve the changes to state regulations.

Among the more controversial measures, state officials want to launch a five-year pilot program allowing some schools to hire teachers from a non-traditional career path. They could qualify by showing "equivalent experience," officials said.

Members of the state Board of Education said they needed more information about the proposal. …
