The Turnpike Commission hit the accelerator yesterday on two highway projects important to Western Pennsylvania - The Mon-Valley-Fayette Expressway and the Southern Beltway.

In a 5-0 vote, the commission decided to "fast track" the two roads, in hopes of cutting in half the time until bulldozers begin construction.

If the plan works as expected, ground could be broken in 2 to 2 years, said Sen. Barry Stout, D-Bentleyville, who along with Sen. William Lincoln, D-Dunbar, requested the fast-track status at the commission's meeting yesterday.

Otherwise, said Stout, the work done by various government agencies before the start of construction might have taken four or five years.
