Paterson Cop Is Indicted in Attack

PATERSON -- City Police Officer Dante Gordon has been indicted on five charges stemming from an off-duty shooting in downtown Paterson in February, authorities announced Thursday.

Gordon, 26, allegedly pointed his gun at a 35-year-old Wanaque man at 1:20 a.m. on Feb. 25 outside the 7-Eleven convenience store at Main and Market streets, authorities said.

"He then discharged the handgun one time," said a media release by Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes.

Authorities said the Wanaque resident, Travis Mann, and another man who was nearby, John Smith, 37, of Paterson, were injured by fragments or debris from the shot Gordon fired.

A grand jury returned the indictment of Gordon on Tuesday, authorities said. He faces a second-degree charge of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, a third-degree terroristic threats charge and three fourth-degree charges of aggravated assault, including one for allegedly pointing the gun at Mann, according to authorities. …
