SOUTH SIDE PIZZA SHOP GETS CONSUMER ALERT FROM ACHD

The Allegheny County Health Department posted a consumer alert at Pittza Rella on the South Side for a string of food safety violations. Some of the problems found at the East Carson Street pizza shop included the presence of roaches, flies and mice; food in the walk-in cooler being held at unsafe temperatures, and improper sanitization. SHADYSIDE COMPANY LAUNCHES VIRTUAL LANGUAGE TUTORS

Shadyside-based Duolingo has introduced fully interactive bots, virtual language tutors, to help students become fluent in another language. The artificial intelligence powered partners ease the task of learning to speak conversationally in a new language with funny, friendly "buddies."

UPMC SUBSIDIARY INVESTING IN MEDICATION VENTURE

UPMC Enterprises, the Pittsburgh health care giant's commercial venture arm, is taking an investment stake in RxAnte, which uses analytics designed to improve patient outcomes and reduce costs related to inappropriate use of medications. RxAnte will continue to operate as an independent company, according to the company. The Arlington, Va.-based company, founded in 2011, says it manages medication use for nearly 7 million people on behalf of insurers, providers and other stakeholders. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

MARS BLENDING CHOCOLATE BUSINESS WITH WRIGLEY

Mars is combining its chocolate business, which makes brands like Snickers, M&M's and Twix, with its Wrigley candy subsidiary, headquartering the combined division in Chicago. The combination was possible after Mars bought out the stake in Wrigley held by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway. Berkshire has held a stake in Wrigley since the company was bought by Mars in 2008. The chocolate business has been based in Mount Olive, N.J., while Wrigley's offices are in Chicago. McLean, Va.-based Mars, which is privately held, said the combination will allow it to speed its growth in the rapidly evolving candy market.
