Two officers killed in California

Two Palm Springs, Calif., police officers trying to resolve a family dispute were shot to death Saturday when a man they had been speaking calmly with suddenly pulled out a gun and opened fire on them, the city's police chief said. A third officer was wounded. The gunman was not immediately apprehended.

"It was a simple family disturbance, and he elected to open fire on the guardians of the city," Police Chief Bryan Reyes said. The chief identified the slain officers as Jose "Gil" Gilbert Vega and Lesley Zerebny. He did not disclose their ranks nor the wounded officer's name.

Dozens rescued from capsized boat * The U.S. Coast Guard says all the young people who were in a sailboat that capsized Saturday near San Francisco's Pier 45 were safely rescued. Petty Officer 3rd Class Lou Stewart had no other details about the accident.

The San Francisco Fire Department said earlier in a tweet that the boat was carrying roughly 30 youths and that some had been trapped under the hull.

NYC prosecutor releases report on fatal shooting * In a rare move, a New York City prosecutor has made public a 71-page, detailed report of a fatal police shooting of a man authorities say was armed. In releasing the report on Friday, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown stated that there was no basis for criminal charges against the officers in the death of George Tillman on April 17 in South Ozone Park, Queens. The family of the Maryland resident say the officers should face a trial.

Turkeys can fly ... sometimes * Six live turkeys were dropped from a small plane as part of a northwestern Arkansas town's annual tradition, but one of the six apparently died when it hit the ground. About 400 people attended the Turkey Trot festival Friday in Yellville, about 90 miles north of Little Rock. …
