The Week Ahead

Economic barometer A new index from the Federal Reserve should provide insight into the state of the labor market. The labor market conditions index is derived from a model based on common variations across several unemployment, hiring, layoffs and other labor market data. The monthly index has been mostly declining this year. It fell 0.7 percent in August after climbing 1.3 percent in July. The September reading is due out Tuesday.

Close-up on the Fed The Federal Reserve releases on Wednesday the minutes of a two-day meeting of its policymakers last month. At the meeting, the panel decided against raising short-term rates, but signaled that it will likely raise rates before years end. The central bank noted that the U.S. job market has continued to strengthen and economic activity has picked up. Still, the Fed added that inflation is too low and that it wants to see further job market improvement.

Eye on Delta Wall Street anticipates that Delta Air Lines latest quarterly earnings failed to eclipse its prior-year results. Financial analysts expect the airline will report on Thursday lower earnings and revenue for the third quarter. That would be a reversal for the company, which posted improved earnings in the first half of the year. Lower oil prices have helped lift Deltas earnings this year.

Mylan plays defense Mylan may continue to suffer bruising to its reputation over runaway pricing for its life-saving EpiPen injection device, but that pain wont likely run deep enough to cut into its bottom line. Thats the general assessment from Wall Street following a Congressional hearing over the price tag for the device and plans to offer a generic version at a lower cost in a move to placate critics. The pharmaceutical company has seen its revenue grow steadily over the years, partly because of higher pricing and sales of EpiPen, which are used in emergencies to stop anaphylaxis. …
