I am writing about the article "Pennsylvania's Legalization of Marijuana Gives Doctors Pause" (Oct. 2). As there is no concrete evidence to support the medicinal benefits of marijuana except for treating chronic pain, which can be treated by any other potent analgesic as effectively, legalization remains debatable by physicians as it puts them in the position of recommending a drug that may carry negative side effects without knowing its benefits.

It's a fact that many patients are using it for self-treating chronic pain, and legalizing marijuana is supposed to help such patients. But the fact remains that legalizing marijuana comes with a huge regulatory responsibility both for the government and health care providers.

There is no denying the use of marijuana by people in general and among college students for recreational purposes. …
