With his deep experience as a former member of both the U.S. House and Missouri House, Russ Carnahan, 58, a Democrat from St. Louis, is best suited to serve as Missouri's next lieutenant governor.

Carnahan's low-key style and history of bipartisanship could help a politically divided Missouri Legislature find more common ground. As a native of Rolla who has lived in St. Louis much of his adult life, he also could help broaden legislative understanding of the different needs confronting the state's rural and urban areas.

In an interview with the Post-Dispatch editorial board, Carnahan, a four-term U.S. congressman, described himself as a coalition builder who worked across the aisle in Congress on such local issues as getting funding to repair some of the nation's deadliest roads, two of which were in Missouri. …
