This week may be the peak of your health all year, in terms of keeping off the pounds, according to a new study from Cornell University.

The Food and Brand Laboratory at Cornell studied weight gain and loss patterns of 3,000 American, German and Japanese study participants and found that just before the start of a country's respective holiday season marks the lowest weight of the year.

Accordingly, here in the U.S., the fall is when Americans weigh the least, and the roughly 10 weeks of the holiday season is when they gain the most. In addition, the extra bulk takes, on average, five months to lose, after peaking around the New Year. Americans increased their weight by 0.2 percent around Thanksgiving and an additional 0.4 percent during Christmas, and have trouble shedding that extra bulk completely until the spring, tapering through the fall. …
