Man Shot in Leg While Riding in Car Late Monday in East Topeka

For the second time in three days, authorities said, a man riding in a vehicle Monday night was shot by a person firing a gun from another vehicle on a Topeka street.

The shooting occurred about 11:30 p.m. in the 2000 block of S.E. California Avenue.

Topeka police Lt. Andrew Beightel said the wounded man was shot in the leg, and his injuries weren't believed to be life- threatening.

Officers were summoned at 11:43 p.m. Monday to Stormont Vail Hospital after a shooting victim arrived by private vehicle.

Police were able to speak to the man, who said he was riding in the front passenger seat of a friend's car when a dark-colored SUV pulled up next to them and opened fire as they were driving north on S.E. California.

The victim, who said he didn't know the person who fired the shots, was struck once during the gunfire. …
