PATERSON -- Amid its long-term fiscal crisis, the school district now must spend $372,000 to repaint and repair the facade of its headquarters at 90 Delaware Ave. -- an expense that officials previously said would be covered by the building's landlord.

The expense comes as the district struggles with ongoing financial problems that resulted in more than 450 terminations over the past two years, including layoffs of about 175 teachers.

The district had been negotiating an extension of its lease on the Delaware Avenue building when preliminary work on the facade started last year, officials said. As part of the negotiations, they said, the district wanted to change the lease so that the landlord would have to pay for such repairs.

But when the negotiations on the extension ended, the cost fell back to the district, as stipulated by the original agreement, officials said. …
