Paterson Drops Proposal to Expand Parking Meters

PATERSON - Bowing to strong opposition from members of the public, city officials scrapped a propsal to increase the number of parking meters in Paterson and to prolong the hours of enforcement.

More than a dozen residents spoke out against the measure Tuesday night at the City Council meeting, with complaints that echoed earlier criticisms by Chamber of Commerce leaders.

Residents said the plan would hurt the city's struggling businesses and put meters on some residential streets.

"You will kill whatever is left in this city," resident Sharrieff Bugg told the council.

"I'm not asking you to table it. I'm asking you to abandon it altogether."

"I have enough problems in my life already to be worried about meters," said 2nd Ward resident Conception Ambert, who lives on a section of McBride Avenue that was included in the expansion plan. …
