Paramus Has Winning Philosophy

PARAMUS - There was more to the loss than the final score.

Paramus fell to Ridgewood, one of North Jersey's most formidable teams, 24-7, in its second game of the season. The teams were tied entering the fourth quarter, before the No. 2 Maroons pulled away in the final period.

The new-look Spartans still were encouraged.

"We didn't win, but we came together, and we saw what we could do with the new scheme," senior defensive lineman Emil LaMarca said.

After losing its first two games, Paramus (3-2) is riding a three- game winning streak into its matchup tonight with Ramapo (3-2).

The Spartans subsequently have experienced a surge of confidence and a spike in intensity on the practice field. But the key reason for Paramus' success has been its ability to adopt a new set of schemes and philosophies ushered in by a new coaching staff.

Its recent results are proof.

"I think everyone - starting with the seniors, all the way through the freshmen - I think we've all bought into what the coaches are saying," senior Albert Mobilio said.

Former head coach Dan Sabella departed during the off-season to fill the same role at powerhouse Paramus Catholic.

Bill Weigel, a former head coach at Lakeland who spent last season as an assistant at Pascack Valley, was hired in January. He brought four assistants with him to join three from the previous staff.

Weigel stepped into a high-profile role.

In recent years, Paramus has been one of the most successful programs in North Jersey. Sabella guided the Spartans to nine consecutive playoff appearances and trips to the North 1, Group 4 championship game in 2013 and 2014.

The Spartans experienced an initial period of transition once Weigel took over.

But it didn't last too long.

"The kids have been great," Weigel said. "The kids have bought in since Day One, since I walked in the door here. They've been extremely dedicated and hard working. …
