Youve got to give credit to Democratic Delegate Mike Pushkin, who has served one term representing the House of Delegates 37th District. That district, encompassing North Charleston, the West Side flats, downtown and the East End, was created back in the 1990s to be a minority influence district and was served well by former Delegate Meshea Poore.

Pushkin was elected in 2014 in his first run for public office. Primarily because of his job as a taxi driver and involvement in the community, he knows the district and its people well, including their problems, issues and concerns.

Sure, Pushkin is more liberal than many conservative voters would like, but that is to be expected for what is probably the most urban district in the state.

He stood up against the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, saying he didnt see a need for the divisive legislation. …
