THE last time Jose Mourinho locked horns with Jurgen Klopp, he looked a beaten man.

As the final whistle blew on a sobering 3-1 defeat a year ago, Mourinho started into the distance as Stamford Bridge emptied around him.

Frozen, with his hands in his pockets, his second coming at Chelsea was reaching its conclusion. In yet another big match - games that were so crucial to each of Mourinho's eight title wins - the Portuguese had been well and truly spanked.

It's become a recurring theme for the Manchester United manager against Klopp.

Unlike Pep Guardiola, where Mourinho has occasionally found the answer, Klopp has an Indian sign over the Portuguese.

In five games against the affable German, Mourinho has won just once and another heavy defeat to Liverpool would be unthinkable for the United boss. While many predict Klopp's team will eventually tire - following vomit-inducing triple sessions in pre-season - there's no denying that he has turned his side into title contenders.

Liverpool, one year on from the German's appointment, have clicked into gear and appear to have finally added some consistency to their attacking prowess.

Running 11km more than any other side in the Premier League is hard evidence of that desire - Klopp's side are just as rampant without the ball as they are with it.

United, on the other hand, find themselves slowly ticking along under Mourinho, who only now appears to have settled on his favoured starting line-up. Expecting a bold move like bringing Henrikh Mkhitaryan in from the cold, just as he did in the Manchester derby, is unimaginable against a welloiled machine like Liverpool.

That cohesion and hunger is why so many teams have struggled to cope with Liverpool this season. Mourinho, though, will have spent much of the international break plotting a game plan to suffocate Liverpool's Duracell Bunnies and target goalkeeper Loris Karius. …
