The Catholic Church Should Re-Evaluate Confession

Much has been written (thanks, PG religion writer Peter Smith) recently concerning the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh's six-county 2018 reorganization and consolidation of its remaining 192 parishes ("Pittsburgh Diocese Unveils Ideas for Parish Mergers," Oct. 11). This is being implemented to counteract the loss of parishioners, lack of priests and growing debt in the diocese.

Named "On Mission for the Church Alive," this restructuring, in my opinion, is a temporary fix that does little to address the continuing and accelerating attrition of practicing Roman Catholics in the Pittsburgh Diocese. And, if this ecclesiastical hemorrhaging isn't stanched, in a few years, these same problems will need additional remediation. Ordination of women and allowing priests to marry would, in a few years, provide enough clerics to adequately staff existing parishes, but that bit of sane reform wouldn't fill the pews. …
