Virginia Minor tries to register to vote in St. Louis, beginning a legal battle that would go all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1875. The court ruled against her.

HEADS UP

EARTHQUAKE DRILL

More than 2.5 million people in 14 states, including more than 500,000 in Missouri, have registered to take part in the Oct. 20 Great Central U. S. "ShakeOut" earthquake drill. Participants are in states that could be affected by a New Madrid Seismic Zone earthquake.

There's still time to sign up at www.shakeout.org/centralus. Once registered, participants receive regular updates on the drill, as well as information on earthquake preparedness and safety.

At 10:20 a.m. Thursday, participants will practice "Drop, Cover, Hold On" as a response to a quake: Drop to your hands and knees, under a table or desk if you can; cover your head and neck with your hands and arms; and hold on until the shaking stops. …
