DEMAREST -- Police arrested a burglary suspect early Friday after, they said, he twice eluded them as they closed in earlier in the evening.

An Elm Place resident called borough police around 8:30 p.m. Thursday to say someone was in their backyard and appeared to be breaking in.

The suspect fled when police arrived, Chief James Powderley III said.

After an "extensive" search, police located a vehicle parked nearby that they believed to be connected to the burglary.

Officers set up watch and they were rewarded when, around 3:15 a.m. Friday, a man matching the description of the suspect was dropped off by someone in a white sport utility vehicle, Powderley said.

When police approached, the suspect once again took off. And once again, police gave chase, said Powderley. …
