Among my duties during decades of service in the U.S. Army, I had the responsibility and privilege of overseeing the recovery of our troops injured in combat.

I commanded the Walter Reed Health Care System in March 2002 when we received wounded soldiers from the Army's 10th Mountain Division, injured in our first major battle in Afghanistan. The 10th Mountain Division's home base is Fort Drum in New York.

I met then-New York Sen. Hillary Clinton when she visited Walter Reed.

Fort Drum is a large, remote post without a military hospital, so Walter Reed and nearby civilian hospitals must cooperate and share the responsibility of hospital care for Fort Drum's population. At Walter Reed, Ms. Clinton showed our troops and their families respect and warmth. Her efforts helped deliver quality care to Fort Drum in a challenging situation. …
