Recently, a Trump campaign official in Ohio stated, "I don't think there was any racism until Obama was elected."

Racism, like its cousin anti-Semitism, has been there, it seems, forever. There were periods when these plagues were dormant. The euphoria of the creation of Israel and the progress in the civil rights legislation worked as effective antidotes. Open anti-Semitism and overt racism were relegated to the status of "politically incorrect." The Israeli-Palestinian conflict was a powerful wake-up call for the dormant anti-Semitism. Jew hatred can now hide behind the skirts of Israel hatred.

When President Barack Obama won the election eight years ago, many of us were jubilant. We were proud of our country for the bold move of electing a black president - a sure sign that this country had joined the ranks of prejudice-free, socially adjusted societies. …
