A WIDESPREAD failure on the tram network was caused by a contractor crashing their vehicle into a vital rail junction, Metrolink bosses have revealed.

Thousands of passengers were delayed throughout yesterday due to the damage, with many forced to take replacement buses or trains.

Engineers were last night desperately working to restore the network and a full investigation has been launched.

Metrolink confirmed the failure was the result of an outside contractor's rail vehicle hitting signalling points at Cornbrook while maintenance work was being carried out overnight on Wednesday.

It meant that scheduled services were unable to use the network during yesterday morning's rush hour, which had a knock-on effect through the day.

A spokesman for Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) said: "During routine overnight engineering works, a set of points at Cornbrook were damaged by a contractor's vehicle. …
