PAUL Pogba has revealed he asked Wayne Rooney if he could take the penalty which opened United's scoring against Fenerbahce.

Rooney, who has a patchy record from 12 yards for United, allowed Zlatan Ibrahimovic to take their spotkick against Southampton in August and stepped aside twice in the 4-1 thrashing of Fenerbahce, as Pogba and Anthony Martial both converted.

"It's Wazza or myself [to take the penalties] but I told him I wanted to take it and he let me take it," Pogba told BT Sport. "So I'm very happy to score that penalty and from a player like him, the captain Wayne Rooney, to let me take the penalty is a big respect so I'm very glad for that.

"I felt comfortable with all the team and we wanted the result at the start of the season, we have a long way to go still but we want to do our best and get to the top of the league. …
