Ferguson-Florrisant School District Recommends Court Retain At- Large School Board Elections

ST. LOUIS * Lawyers representing the Ferguson-Florissant schools are standing by the method the district uses to elect school board members, even though a judge says it violates the Voting Rights Act.

On Wednesday, the district filed a 31-page recommendation to U.S. District Court Judge Rodney W. Sippel that asks the judge to preserve the current system.

At the same time, the district is signalling it may appeal Sippel's ruling, which mandated that new election methods be used.

"An appeal is certainly not out of the question," said district lawyer Cindy Ormsby on Wednesday. "I think the current system really is the best."

Sippel ruled in August that the current elections, in which school board members are elected across the whole school district, weakened the voting power of black residents. …
