EAST RUTHERFORD - Eli Manning insists he would never say anything about Odell Beckham Jr. that he would not first say to him directly.

Nobody knows better than the Giants' two-time Super Bowl MVP quarterback how words can be perceived differently than intended, creating fodder for social media and the New York tabloids.

In the past, comments about Manning have been used against him - hello, Tiki Barber.

But now, as has been the case seemingly every week of this season, Manning is being asked about Beckham as much as he is about his own game.

Those responses have landed him in the middle of a controversy Manning wants no part of - and actually, he's not even sure why one exists.

"I'm not trying to make comments about him," Manning said with a wry smile and a glance toward Beckham's empty locker Tuesday afternoon. "Hey, I get asked about him a lot so I have to comment about it. Odell and I have a great relationship. We talk about a lot of things. We're on the same page. He knows I'm always looking out for him and he understands that the way you say things can kind of get taken one way."

Manning and Beckham answered critics of their play in Sunday's 27- 23 victory over the Ravens when the former threw for three touchdowns and 403 yards and the latter had his best game as a professional with eight catches for a career-high 222 yards and two touchdowns, including the 66-yard game-winning score with 1:24 remaining.

The criticism followed Beckham after his heroics, of course, first for the personal foul he drew for removing his helmet in the end zone and then for his antics on the sideline with the kicking net, including a fake marriage proposal to the net.

In his weekly interview on WFAN-AM 660/FM 101.9, when asked of the extracurricular activities involving Beckham, Manning - who has continuously defended Beckham as a teammate -- said: "It's one of those deals where, you can get real sick of it if you're not going out there and making plays. …
