Ferriero Corruption Appeal Is Set

Lawyers for former Bergen County Democratic Chairman Joseph A. Ferriero will get a chance on Nov. 1 to try to convince a federal appeals court to throw out his 2015 conviction on corruption charges.

Convicted on racketeering and fraud charges, Ferriero in April began serving a 35-month sentence at a federal prison in Pennsylvania. Jurors decided he used his position as the county chairman to get five municipalities to hire a Nutley software company, C3, that had developed an emergency notification system. Prosecutors said Ferriero solicited and accepted a 25 percent "kickback" on what the company made from municipal contracts.

Ferriero's attorneys are arguing that prosecutors applied several statutes too broadly, including New Jersey's state law against bribery.
