Route 495 Bridge Fix Forces Lanes to Close

NORTH BERGEN -- Motorists are being advised to avoid eastbound Route 495 in North Bergen this weekend because of emergency bridge repairs that will require the closure of lanes heading toward the Lincoln Tunnel, state officials said.

The work began at 10 p.m. Friday and will continue until 4 a.m. on Monday, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Motorists should expect delays in the area, and seek alternate routes into New York City, such as the George Washington Bridge or Holland Tunnel.

On Saturday afternoon, the road work caused eastbound traffic to back up on Route 3 into Secaucus.

Closing two lanes

The DOT said its contractor, Mount Construction, is closing the two left lanes of eastbound Route 495 east -- just before the highway crosses over Routes 1 and 9 -- to repair a collapsed expansion joint. …
