CROSS COUNTRY CLASS 2A-DISTRICT 7

ENGLEWOOD -- Kelsi Ogilvie and Alan Romero took a lonely but satisfying 3.1-mile jaunt on a glorious Saturday morning around the Lemon Bay High School campus.

Running virtually alone the entire race, Ogilvie and Romero easily captured memorable district titles in their own rights.

Ogilvie established a Lemon Bay girls school record with her time of 18 minutes, 48 seconds.

Romero won the first district title in Sarasota Military Academy cross country history with his finish in 17:32.

Ogilvie helped the Manta Rays coast to their fifth straight district title with 20 points over Clearwater Central Catholic (55) and Southeast (58), the only other schools with full teams.

Romero will have company at the regional meet, as teammates Mark- Elliot Finley (9th in 19:59) and Alex Murphy (11th in 19:10) finished among the top 15.

With 68 points, Lemon Bay edged Sarasota Military Academy (71) for the third and final spot in the team standings behind winner St. Petersburg Lakewood (51) and runner-up Clearwater Central Catholic (63).

The top three teams and first 15 individuals in each race advance to the 2A-Region 3 meet Friday at Holloway Park in Lakeland.

Ogilvie and Romero had different agendas: Ogilvie wanted to get into the 18s time-wise; Romero wanted to cross first.

Both accomplished their goals.

"Overall, I wanted a good time," Ogilvie said.

With coach Tom Trealout on the course informing Ogilvie of her times, she knew she would have to pick up the pace during the second mile.

"At the two mile I had to push it if I was going to get in 18," she said. "Getting in the 18s is worth it."

Her 18:48 broke the old school mark set of 18:53 set by Nicole Mis at the Celtic Invitational in Naples in 2012. Ogilvie's previous best was 19:05 earlier this season at the North Port Invitational.

Saturday, she was a whopping 25 seconds faster than the second- place finisher. …
