Rotary District Governor Visits Putnam Chapter, Discusses Flood Relief Efforts

John D. "Robbie" Powell visited Putnam Rotary on Oct. 18 in Hurricane, with a call for stronger community service, especially locally in the aftermath of tragedies from the floods in late June.

As district governor for clubs in the southern part of the state (Rotary International District 7550), Powell organized a District Relief Team to bring food supplies and recovery assistance in to areas hit hardest by the tragedy.

The district quickly set up a fund for tax-deductible contributions and raised over $45,000 in the first five days.

Metro Putnam reported on Sept. 30 that the team contacted Disaster Aid USA, a nonprofit Rotary relief program, which was on scene within days.

"We served [meals for] over 350 per day for 15 days over three- and-a-half weeks, Thursdays through Sundays, in front of Glade Elementary in Cowen, serving folks from Williams River, Cowen, Camden of the Gauley and Bolair areas, said Assistant District Gov. …
