'WE'RE making a TV series about the Pope and Jude Law is going to play him". Not the kind of thing you hear every day.

When you're casting for the role of Pope, a handsome young(ish) movie star with a list of celebrity exes and a bit of a wild reputation isn't normally the first person you'd go for. Then again, award-winning Italian writer and director Paolo Sorrentino, who is behind this lavish new drama, doesn't much go in for 'normal'.

This viewers will establish within about five seconds, as the very first scene shows said Pope crawling out from under a vast mountainous pile of naked babies, all set to a haunting soundtrack.

Yep, this is weird, arty-farty stuff. It's also contradictory, which in part could be down to being set in the Vatican.

It seems like a place where time has stood still, meaning this could easily be a period drama from decades or centuries ago, but there's our Pope (previously known as Lenny Belardo) smoking a fag and ordering a Cherry Coke Zero, very much in 2016. …
