Pitt Board to Hear Proposal for Computing School

The University of Pittsburgh board of trustees today is expected to weigh a proposal to create a new school by combining Pitt's School of Information Sciences and the computer science department within the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences.

The board's academic affairs and libraries committee on Thursday agreed to forward the proposal to the full board. If approved, the new entity would be called the School of Computing and Information.

If created, the school is expected to spawn new course offerings and programs and would "better position Pitt to take advantage of big data, our expertise in computing, and our expertise in information sciences," said Pitt spokesman Joseph Miksch.

No job losses are expected, he said, and during the next five years new positions are expected to be created. …
