Build-A-Bear Shares Soar on 3Q Results, Improved Forecast

Build-A-Bear Workshop's third-quarter profit rose and the retailer updated its guidance for the year, sending shares up more than 12 percent on Thursday.

The Overland-based national retailer reported profit of $1.8 million, or 11 cents a share, in the period ended Oct. 1, up from $1.1 million, or 6 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. Revenue totaled $83.7 million in the quarter, down from $85.6 million a year earlier, falling short of expectations. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S expected revenue to reach $86.5 million.

"While sales were soft early in the quarter when we anniversaried a key movie product launch, we finished with positive momentum that has carried into the start of our fourth quarter, which is typically our largest and most profitable of the year," company president and CEO Sharon Price John said in a statement. …
