T'S been a while since Microsoft hogged the headlines. Google, Apple and Amazon have seen to that.

IBut quietly, Microsoft has been making progress under new CEO Satya Nadella. In fact the company's value hit an all-time high at the end of last week. They must be doing something right.

The latest effort to get Microsoft back into the limelight came at a special event the company held in New York this week. There were some hardware announcements, and some software news.

WINDOWS 10 CREATORS UPDATE WINDOWS 10 has been a success - not a success like Windows XP was, but is another step back down the right road following a succession of poor releases over the last few years. The Windows 10 "Creators Update" brings a slew of improvements to Windows, and will be available in the spring. What's new? 3D: Windows 10 goes big on 3D with the goal of making 3D creation available to everyone. There's a new phone app that will scan items, rendering them as 3D images. And there's an update to the Windows Paint app, which makes creating 3D drawing easier. Windows People: The update will also bring the concept of "people" to the desktop. This manifests itself in a collection of avatars representing your favourite contacts sitting in the toolbar.

You can interact easily with them, through various apps. Windows VR headset: In addition to the Hololens (Microsoft's foray into augmented reality), the new Windows update will also bring support for VR headsets. Microsoft isn't making its own headset, though, but says its PC-making partners, like HP or Asus, will be making compatible ones soon.

XBOX LIVE STREAMING LIVE streaming of gameplay, built on Xbox live, will come to Windows though the Xbox app with the update. You'll be able to see comments and suggestions from your Xbox Live contacts in-game, too. …
