Laced Up and Ready to Go Knights Given New Cleats

PATERSON -- The Kennedy Knights freshman football team received new cleats on Friday, equipment purchased with donations from alumni and local businesses, Councilman Michael Jackson said.

The $9,000 in contributions also would pay for cleats for the Eastside freshman squad that are in the process of being ordered, Jackson said.

Jackson, who played quarterback at Kennedy years ago, said he hopes to organize more ambitious fundraising campaigns to improve the facilities and equipment provided to Paterson's high school teams. The councilman said he has noticed that schools in other towns have far better "amenities."

"It's about giving our kids the best opportunities," said Jackson, who volunteered as an assistant coach for the freshman team this year when he dropped his son off at practice and noticed one coach running things by himself. …
