AFTER years of watching her play one of the most adorable and lovely women on the planet, as Downton's Anna Bates, it's strange to think of Joanne Froggatt as a baddie.

And even more so when we first meet her as Mary Ann, a smiley, pretty lass who has returned home to her native North East in 1857 with her husband Billy, desperately grieving the loss of four of their young children.

But then that's probably the point, as this two-part drama is all based on a true story. And the dark angel herself - Mary Ann Cotton - didn't become 'Britain's first female serial killer' overnight. But that is the terrifying title she earned, after murdering more than a dozen people before eventually being caught and sentenced to hang.
