As the presidential campaign approaches the finish line, it's clear that important issues are getting lost in all the vitriol and personal attacks.

Everyone agrees Social Security needs to be updated for the 21st century. The experts at the Social Security Trust Fund estimate that if we stay on our current path and do nothing, in less than 20 years Social Security recipients will lose 25 percent of their benefits.

Ensuring Social Security's future isn't a partisan issue. Franklin Roosevelt paved the way for the new program during the Great Depression. Years later, Ronald Reagan worked across party lines to achieve a major overhaul. A Democrat and a Republican - each understood the need to keep Social Security strong for future generations.
