Article excerpt

CAPE GIRARDEAU * Lutheran South senior hitter Leketor Member- Meneh got up early Saturday morning.

After a night of tossing and turning, the 5-foot-7 slugger finally got up around 6:45.

"I kept trying to force myself back to sleep," she said. "Eventually, I gave up."

Like a caged lion, the anxious Member-Meneh could not wait to play for the state title.

Neither could her teammates.

Lutheran South turned in a razor-sharp performance in knocking off Pleasant Hill 25-23, 25-21 in the Class 3 championship match at Show-Me Center.

The Lancers (34-3-3) claimed their first championship in their fifth final four appearance.

"It's so amazing," senior libero Samantha Brinkmann said. "We've wanted this for so long. Now, we can finally say it, 'We're state champs!' "

Member-Meneh, who has given a verbal commitment to attend the University of Missouri, led the way with 19 kills in 23 attempts. Her eye-popping leaping skills enabled her to hit over a tall front line designed to stop her.

Brinkmann triggered an aggressive defensive effort with a match- high 13 digs. Senior Sarah Rivers recorded five block assists, each at an opportune time.

Sophomores Peyton Van Nest and Livia Sandt set the attack in motion with 14 and 12 assists, respectively.

Emma Lind added five kills, including back-to-back spikes that helped turn the tide in the second set.

All told, it likely was the Lancers' best performance of the season.

"Everything was clicking," Rivers said.

Added Sandt, "You could tell we really wanted it."

Member-Meneh wanted it so badly that she was ready to play long before breakfast.

Sandt felt the same way.

"When I first got up, I said, 'I'm ready, let's go right to the court,' " Sandt said.

The Lancers had to chill a while. The 4:30 p.m. start gave Member- Meneh and Brinkmann plenty of time to reflect on their four-year careers. …
