Ol' blue eyes used to sing "call me irresponsible" and I'm willing to accept that label for my refusal to exercise the cherished privilege of voting in this year's presidential election. But at least it reveals that my conscience, heart and mind are all intact.

The great iconoclastic writer Gore Vidal said that "the United States was founded by the brightest people in the country, and we haven't seen them since," and the evidence has never been stronger in support of his words.

We have reached the nadir of American politics. The Associated Press reports that only about 6 percent of people have trust in Congress, about the same percentage who have trust in the media. Why do so many career politicians inside the Beltway end up getting dirtier than a Pennsylvania coal miner, and with grime that doesn't wash off in the shower? …
