Ridgefield Forfeits Because of Numbers

Ridgefield informed the NJIC on Tuesday that its football team will not play its regular-season finale against Weehawken because of low participation numbers, becoming the fourth Bergen County school to forfeit a game within the past month.

Bergen Tech, Dumont and Queen of Peace also have chosen to forgo at least one game recently because of dwindling rosters, injuries and safety concerns.

The Royals, who end their season at 0-7 after forfeiting their game scheduled for Friday night, are down to only "13 or 14 players," conference executive director Stan Fryczynski said in an email.

Ridgefield did not play a varsity schedule in 2015 because it lacked a sufficient number of players. But athletic director Jon Duncan told Fryczynski that the school expects to field a varsity team in 2017. …
