Gabby Fredette will be staying close to home.

The Immaculate Conception senior from Hackensack verbally committed Tuesday to play for the Manhattan College softball team.

"It felt like a home away from home," Fredette said. "The coach is great, the environment is nice, and the people and the administration are welcoming and helpful."

The Blue Wolves' shortstop hit .511 last spring with 18 RBI, 38 runs and 32 stolen bases. She earned All-North Jersey honors and helped her team post a 20-9 record. Fredette said she also received offers from Kean, Rowan and Philadelphia University, among others.

"She has very good speed and is one of the quickest kids in North Jersey," Immaculate Conception coach Jeff Horohonich said. "She has a great sense of the game and she'll be a fine addition to their program."

* Gabby Baratta has achieved one of her biggest goals well before the first race of her senior season.

The NV/Old Tappan swimmer and former Bergen County champion has verbally committed to continue her career at Nebraska. …
