Daunting Long-Term Effects of Head Injuries

Concussions, and their long-term health risks, are coming to light more and more. A new study, for example, suggests there's a link between a head injury in youth and diminished social and health outcomes as adults.

Researchers from Oxford University, Indiana University and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, collaborated on the study, published in the journal PLOS Medicine. The researchers focused on the data of Swedish people born between 1973 and 1985.

More than 100,000 of these people had reported suffering from a head injury before the age of 25, said researchers, who then compared their later health data and records with that of a sibling who did not have a head injury. Results? Just one injury to the head, such as a concussion, was linked with a much higher chance of seeking disability than the sibling or the population at large. …
