PLANS to turn Manchester's historic Mackie Mayor market into an Altrincham-style food hall have been given the go-ahead.

One of the last standing buildings from the city's old Smithfield Market, the grade II-listed Swan Street building has stood empty since the 1990s and is now to be brought back into use by the team behind Altrincham's award-winning Market House.

The new Northern Quarter development will follow a similar model, with a central communal seating area surrounded by a selection of artisan food and drink outlets including existing Altrincham traders Honest Crust; Tender Cow and their fish sideline Fin; Katie's Cakes; Bao House; Blackjack brewery and Reserve Wines.

They will be joined by new operators Nationale 7, serving rotisserie chicken, and tea and coffee house Atkinsons of Lancaster in the hall, which will be open until 10pm daily. …
