This is a reply to Lois Newman's letter ("Nuisance Calls," Oct. 31) in which she says she "would like to see a list of legitimate organizations."

I am a retired librarian and I can assure Ms. Newman that if she goes to the local library the reference staff there will be able to steer her toward online lists of nonprofits or charities that will satisfy her curiosity.

In particular, I would suggest that she find the December 2016 issue of Consumer Reports, page 50. At the bottom of the page is a brief, boxed article, "A Truly Heartfelt Gift," which describes several sources for checking what Ms. Newman refers to as "legitimate organizations."

If she can't get to the library and/or doesn't have access to Consumer Reports, here are the websites it lists which will allow people to identify organizations that are on the up and up:
