Ahn Posts Operating Loss of $17.7M

The Allegheny Health Network recorded a $17.7 million operating loss for the quarter ending Sept. 30, representing more than half of its total $34.4 million operating loss so far for 2016.

The figures appear in a filing with the Pennsylvania Insurance Department posted Wednesday.

In the filing, the seven-hospital Pittsburgh network reported better-than-expected operating revenue at $711.7 million for the three-month period, but that was more than offset by expenses "including those related to patient care supplies and drugs, professional fees, purchased services and restructuring costs," said spokesman Dan Laurent.

He said network officials are encouraged by an increase in patient volume, and added that the network now has more than 80 initiatives in place designed to rein in expenses.

Occupancy for the seven AHN hospitals was 67. …
