* Still his man: Pirates Manager Gene Lamont isn't ready to give up on struggling Rich Loiselle, who took the loss Saturday night and fell to 1-7. Loiselle, a key to the team's surprising success last season when he converted 29 of 34 save opportunities, has blown seven saves this season.

"If I felt he was so far away, I'd send him to the minors to get him going," Lamont said. "But I feel he's real close. He's been pitching much, much better than he was. For part of this season, he was just lost. But we don't feel that way now."

* Sticking with Pee Wee: Lamont considered starting Elmer Dessens against the Chicago Cubs tomorrow night because of Chris Peters' tender hamstring. But Peters threw on the side Saturday and reported no problems. He might not be able to hold off Dessens much longer, however, if he doesn't start pitching better. …
