Mifflin Estates Residents Want Buses to Return

Maria Green struggled to maintain her composure last Friday while she asked the Port Authority board of directors to resume bus service where she lives in the Mifflin Estates housing complex in West Mifflin.

Ms. Green said it costs her about $80 of the $244 she takes home every two weeks from a weekend job to pay for a ride to the nearest bus stop. She also told the board she needs radiation treatment for breast cancer and has trouble getting there.

"To get to a bus stop, you have to pay $5 to $10 a day for a ride," she said. "What else do we have to do to get our bus back?"

Ms. Green also said her daughter has lost two jobs due to transportation issues.

The authority eliminated service to Mifflin Estates when it had severe budget cuts in 2009. But residents of the 201 units of Section 8 housing say the lack of transit cuts them off from necessities including jobs, higher education, day care, medical appointments and a grocery. …
